Hydrography
Within the 2-years Master program “Geomatik” (Geomatics) a specialization in Hydrography is possible - completely taught in English.
Safe navigation can only be achieved if National Hydrographic Offices and related administrative authorities employ hydrographers with a high level of competence both in hydrographic surveying and nautical charting. Up-to-date sensor technology and data processing methods have to be applied. An effective data management is essential. Modern methods of nautical charting also contribute directly to the protection of marine ecosystems through a reduction in ship groundings and maritime accidents. Furthermore, the hydrographic database provides important components for marine pollution detection, coastal zone management, as well as sensitive ecosystem identification and monitoring.
The hydrography program at HCU was examined by the International Advisory Board of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), and accredited according to the “Standards of Competence of Hydrographic Surveyors” at Category A (highest level).
Modules of the hydrography specialization are as follows: Data Processing, Higher Geodesy, Basis Hydrography, Hydrography II, GIS Hydrography, Hydrography III, Navigation, Practice (3 weeks of supervised field training), Marine Geodesy / Geophysics, Fundamental Oceanography, Marine Environment, Software Technology, Project in Marine Geomatics Engineering including Project management), Master Thesis (3 Months), Final Examination.
Application is possible between June 1st and July 15th. The program starts every year in October.
Entry Requirements: You need a Bachelor’s degree in hydrography, geomatics, or a related field. A satisfactory score (equivalent to German mark 3,0) on the Bachelor’s examination is required. Applicants whose university qualification is from a country outside of the European Union (EU) have to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test.
Foreign applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of their English language capability. The following certificates are accepted: TOEFL (550/220), IELTS (Band 6), Cambridge Certificate (CAE, CPE).
The university fee amounts € 375. Each semester students are required to pay a semester contribution (at present € 250 per semester). This includes the costs for the »semester ticket«, a ticket that permits free travel on Hamburg‘s public transport system.
For hydrography students there is a special hall of residence called „Haus Bauhütte“ where you can live close to the river Alster in a comfortable house together with other students.
